Nuance: Life in Graphite

I am, at the heart of it, an interpreter; taking an object created by another artist in one material and translating it into another. How different a marble by Bernini looks when first reproduced by the process of photography, then again reinterpreted in pencil and watercolor on a colored ground. Each process changes the original while allowing it to retain what makes it unique and recognizable.

Whether I’m drawing from a marble cupid by Cayot, or the photographed musculature of a Jim French bodybuilder, the source of the inspiration is usually the human form. It fascinates and captivates me like no other subject ever has.

Despite the fact that drawing is, in the hierarchy of the arts, a minor medium, it is the one that I’ve spent my lifetime developing and perfecting.

About the Artist

Lynn Beaulieu
Born August 20, 1951

Lynn’s interest in drawing began in his early childhood, originally as his way of recreating the experiences of life that surrounded him. He felt lucky to be able to interpret these events, i.e. a good movie or an exciting story, through drawing and illustration, in a way that others around him could not. His education past high school was and is comprised of countless hours studying the masters, both old and new. His range of focus spans the broadest influences, from Beardsley to Tom of Finland, Joshua Reynolds to Giacomo Serpotta, Jim French to Hyacinthe Rigaud, all supplying unique inspiration for his work.

Through his work, he supports countless AIDS benefits and organizations including APH, Bread and Roses, Toys for Tots, ACT UP and Artists Against Aids. He has created logos and business cards for design firms, caterers, retailers and other businesses. His illustrations have appeared in advertisements for regional theatre companies. He is also a judge at regional amateur art shows.
